Raven's Children

by Layla Marie Lawlor

This is a darkly rich arctic sci-fi/fantasy set in a world on the brink of war. At the center of this complex, genre-crossing tale is Jained, a haunted man employed as a translator by a disgraced nobleman. The nobleman, a warrior exiled to the bleak northernmost military outpost of a great empire, faces enemies both within and without his garrison.

In the snow-swept wilderness of an Ice Age world, the former slave and his employer develop a friendship that surprises them both. One man seeks to free himself from real or imagined chains; the other wants redemption from his sins. But this is a land of ancient magic and ancestral hatreds, where gods play games with men's souls and sentient machines walk the land in the guise of beasts...where the traditions of three peoples bring treacherous and immutable forces into the landscape of the human heart.
