Birthday Bash Awards
February 18, 2006

The seventh annual birthday bash, held on Sunday, February 12 at Hartung Hall, drew a good crowd and even better food. At 7 p.m., the Publisher’s Picks awards were announced. The publisher wanted to pick out worthy contributions to the paper that might be unlikely to gain recognition in more traditional venues, such as are found in press clubs or journalism organizations, so the categories were a little unusual.

Awards were presented as follows:

Anecdotal Tale: for “How I Almost Shot a Grizzly in My Pajamas,” a blow-by-blow tale of terror by Art Greenwalt, not a member of the Save-A-Porkie Society (v. 7 n. 6)

Photograph: for “Joe Milkey eludes Mark Simpson,” a series of action shots by Mike Musick, builder and Ester Football League player (v. 7 n. 5)

Cartoon: for “oops,” an editorial cartoon by Jamie Smith, drawin’ fool (v. 7 n. 3)

Letter to the Editor: for “The Other Guy’s Editorial, on “Beware the howling” from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, by Carla Helfferich, former Ecology 101 student (v. 7 n. 4)

Review: for “I Want to Ride My Bike!” book review and commentary by David A. James, the guy who still rides a kid’s toy (v. 7 n. 8)

Feature Story: for “Pride Fest,” a scoop by Carolyn Stice, a woman with a fondness for dance and tequila (v. 7 n. 7)

Series: for “Sliced & Stoned in Honolulu, Or, How I Spent My Winter,” a medical saga by Carla A. O. Helfferich, summit dweller and cyborg (v. 7 nos. 5-11)

Poesy: for “Ice Cream,” a poem by Marjorie Kowalski Cole, award-winning novelist (and now poet, too) (v. 7 n. 1)

Most Independent: for “The Cannibisation of Justice,” an Alaskan sentiment by K.W.M. Farmen, a man who knows what his business is and what yours isn’t (v. 7 n. 8)

Most Republican: for “Happy Birthday, Bill of Rights,” an essay by Dirk R. Nelson, small-l libertarian (v. 7 n. 12)

Esteroidia: for “The Honor Among Men Who Work Together,” a poem by Spider Wentworth, former Esteroid and Malemute Saloon show performer (v. 7 n. 8)

The photograph, cartoon, letter to the editor, and poesy awards posed the most difficulty in choosing, and had the publisher been a little better organized for the event, she would have given out the following honorable mentions:

Photograph: “Kiss My Ear,” shot of a moose by C.P. McRoy, Intrepid Wildlife Photographer (v. 7 n. 10)

Cartoon: “Jim Holm’s Bitch,” by Dan Darrow, staff cartoonist (v. 7 n. 9)

Letter to the Editor: “Run, Ralph, Run!” by Thom Delayed, president, Ethicists for Seekins (v. 7 n. 6)

Poesy: “Invitation,” by Cam Leonard (v. 7 n. 2)

The Publisher’s Picks will be a feature of future birthday bashes. Several people were not on hand to receive their awards in person (you know who you are), so they’ll just have to wait until the awards certificates are mailed.
