Web Feet Quackwatch, Inc., a member of Consumer Federation of America, is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies. Its primary focus is on quackery-related information that is difficult or impossible to get elsewhere. It is a good consumer guide to intelligent decision making regarding both alternative and traditional health topics. Their activities include: investigating questionable claims, answering inquiries, reporting illegal marketing, attacking misleading advertising on the Internet, and distributing reliable publications, among other things. A free electronic newsletter with monthly updates, etc., is available upon request. This site is both informative and interesting, and the site has several language alternatives to the English already in place. Buildersbooksite is the on-line site of Builders Booksource, founded in 1982 by a couple who had interests in architecture, real estate, building trades, education, and literature. They now have two stores, one in Berkeley and one in San Francisco. This site is the extension of those stores. The owners’ idea was to create a central location in which to find books, reference materials, and software for homebuilders, architects, contractors, do-it yourselfers, and consumers. The store and its site are considered the best collection and resource regarding all phases of construction, building and landscape design on the west coast. Any contractor or builder who has not used or heard of this place has really missed out on a great resource! If they don't have the book, it has not been printed. I’ve profiled it in this column before, but it’s worth doing again, because now it’s even better. Not only does the site have all the normal weather categories and general information for Alaska and the U.S., but it now includes actual weather radar just like they have had in the Lower 48 for some years already. Wunderground also has the benefit of NEXRAD radar, that can now supply us Alaskans with (almost) real time visual forecasts of rain and snow in our local areas. It's fun just to watch the rain/snow and ice, etc., move around on the screen or see the blizzard coming toward you. This will be a great help to trappers, snowmachiners, and bush busters of all types. With this site you no longer have to deal with the tenous forecasts of the local paper and TV stations.This site also has many small, site-specific weather stations—not just Fairbanks or Anchorage, but many small places like North Pole, Nenana, Circle, etc., that do not appear in other weather forecasting. 4) www.collectorschoicemusic.com Finally this excellent catalog, devoted to oldies of almost every era and every genre, has an excellent website with more than 25,000 titles in its vault. The site not only handles oldies of every description, but has sneak peeks at upcoming releases and exclusives, and many budget CDs and titles that are not easily found on any other site. These people have everything from Bing Crosby oldies to the first Small Faces recording to Earnest Tubbs Greatest Hits, and stuff you thought had gone the way of the dinosaurs. If there is an album you wish you could hear again but were sure was lost or out of print, you should try this site. I have used this site several times with excellent service and results.
