Volume 3, number 1, January 2001 Firebreak Things were fairly quiet here at the fire department during the first three weeks of December. We had only five medical/rescue calls, but one of them was a serious motor vehicle accident. It occurred December 20 on the corner of Sheep Creek Road and the Parks Highway. Both Ester and Chena-Goldstream responded and two children with cuts and minor injuries were transported to the hospital by Chena-Goldstream. Their mother rode along with them in the ambulance. We thank Ms. Jeri Lucier, who stopped by the fire station with Christmas cookies for us. Ms Lucier thanked the Ester Volunteer Fire Department for saving her life on October 28, 1999, when she was very seriously injured and trapped in the wreckage of an accident on the Parks Highway after a collision between a pickup and a large truck. Ester and Chena-Goldstream crews responded, used specialized hydraulic "jaws" to spread the crushed metal apart, got Ms. Lucier out of the wreck, and rushed her to the hospital. Ms. Lucier has spent over a year courageously recovering from her injuries. She says that her legs are getting better and that she will soon be able to walk unassisted. The Ester Volunteer Fire Department has twice received the "Jaws of Life" award for life-saving rescues involving difficult extractions of victims from the wreckage of motor vehicle accidents. A few reminders from the fire department: Now that we are in the coldest time of year, please be sure you have appropriate warm clothing with you in your vehicle at all times in case of emergency. Be careful when you use jumpers to start your car. If you hook them up wrong, the battery can blow up. Watch out for other vehicles if you are trying to get someone started in traffic out on the road. Now that furnaces are running full blast, check your chimmney system and make sure nothing is getting too hot. The fire department is looking for equipment for their exercise program. We may be able to use old exercise equipment; if you have some you would consider donating, please give us a call at 479-6858. As we cover calls during the holiday season we are reminded of how much we need more volunteers to fill in the gaps. The Tuesday evening training meetings, at 7 p.m., are a perfect opportunity to find out what you can do. Please think of coming down to give us a hand and volunteering your time for the fire department.
