Firebreak
by Joe Yurchak, station manager
Ester Volunteer Fire Department

Yes, it looks like you will have to put up with me again this issue. J.D. is on hiatus and the other members are still too shy to write. You do the math.

We’ve had a fantastic month since last I’ve written. Our annual meeting on September 22nd was a big success! The community at hand re-elected Ritchie Musick, Paul Beals, and Ann Delong to the EVFD Board of Directors. Also elected to the EVFD board was Frank Therrell. Although Frank has not been put through the hazing process yet (oops, forgot to mention that at the meeting), we are excited to have him on board (no pun intended). Thanks again to our other EVFD board members Margaret Rogers, Jackie Debbaut, and Tom Richardson who come up for re-election next year.

During the meeting special thanks was given to the Rasmuson Foundation Grant for buying EVFD twenty new sets of turnouts. Also thanked was the Fire Plug Dog Sled Race for purchasing two of our new SCBAs (air packs). These generous donations will ensure the safety of our firefighters in an unsafe environment.

Last month we had the chance to send some firefighters to the Alaska State Firefighters Association conference here in Fairbanks. Our firefighters attended hands-on classes like Propane Emergencies, Flammable Liquids, Advance Auto Extrication, Strategies and Tactics, and much more.

If you didn’t notice, EVFD was set up at the post office and at the fire station during elections for National Fire Prevention Week. Home Depot donated the professional grade fire extinguishers used in the free drawing. Winners will be mentioned in next month’s Firebreak. For those of you who were not able to get one of our free lithium battery smoke detectors…fear not. The donations we received during this week will be used to purchase more! Ray and volunteers—thanks again for all of your hard work at the elections.

Welcome new members Mike Butteri, Ben Hammond, Mark Woodward, Sandy and Shelby Bakken. I am not sure the last time we mentioned new members, so I hope that I am not leaving anyone out. Also, congratulations to Jeff Debbaut, our newest graduate from our Explorer program.

I think that I have officially rambled enough. It’s getting nasty out there, so please be safe. If you are interested in finding out how to get more involved with the EVFD, please stop down and see me. On the same note, if you are able to think of ways the EVFD can assist you in your life or the community, please stop down and see me. If I have thoroughly confused you, please stop down and see me. Thanks and have a great month.
