Fire Break
by Kyle Carrington, volunteer firefighter
Ester Volunteer Fire Department

Greetings to Ester! Slowly but surely the weather is warming up (?!) and spring is on its way. Just a reminder that the warming of the weather can make for terrible road conditions. Any precipitation on the road may thaw during the days and freeze again at night. Please remember to use caution when driving, and as always, use your seatbelt.

Recently the fire department members have been occupying themselves with medical training. Members must do a refresher class every two years to ensure that we are up to date on skills and new techniques. We have just certified four members as EMT-2s, and one EMT-3. This helps us to provide a higher level of medical care.

We also had members standing by at the finish line of the Fireplug Sled Dog Race on Sunday, February 28. They reported a day of good weather, high spirits, and great food at the awards ceremony afterwards! Their appreciation to all who helped coordinate the event.

In the upcoming weeks, the Ester Volunteer Fire Department members will be honing their skills, training for identifying and dealing with hazardous materials, and preparing for the wildland fire season.

Fire Safety Tip of the Month:

Be sure to change the batteries in your smoke detector every six months, and test it regularly. If you have any questions or concerns, or are in need of a smoke detector, they are available free of charge from the department. Feel free to call any time at 479-6858.
