Civil Rights & Responsibilities / volume 5 number 6, June 2003 Independence Day Vote on ECA Resolutions Members of the Ester Community Association voted July 4 on three resolutions which were first proposed at the 2003 spring meeting. The vote encouraged the enrollment of many new ECA members and the renewing of lapsed memberships, since people had to be current members in order to vote. Voting took place at the Ester Community Park during the Fourth of July picnic. The results are below. Resolution 1: Passed; 53 yes, 1 no, 1 unclear Ester is now a nuclear-free zone. No nuclear weapons or power plants may be established or exploded in the Ester region. Resolution 2: Passed; 51 yes, 3 no, 1 unclear Ester is now a MacDonald’s-free zone. This applies to all fast food chain restaurants as exemplified by MacDonald’s restaurants. Resolution 3: Passed; 52 yes, 0 no, 0 unclear Ester is now a USA PATRIOT Act-free zone. A formal statement will be drafted by the ECA for dissemination to our Congressional delegation, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly, and other official bodies.
