Letters to the Editor (The following two letters were accompanied by wine corks.) November 2005 Hope you’re still collecting corks. It’s a project I’m all too happy to help with. My backup collectors moved to Arizona so the burden of local supply is all mine. More to come. The Republic gets better with each issue. E. Clausen Dec. 2005 It’s taken me a while to get three corks’ worth of wine! Usually, I never think about it unless I go out for dinner. At least the state of Wisconsin can be represented in your artwork! (Medicine prevents me from having my long-time favorite scotch!) As long as I’m sending this I’ll send my check for The Ester Republic. Best wishes for the holidays to my favorite editor! Love and hugs, The Editor replies: Cork collection proceeds apace, thank you! We’ve only got about one-fifth of what we’ll need, and that represents quite a lot of corks. Plastic corks are welcome (we’ll use these on the more exposed portions of the kiosk). We don’t have nearly enough old CDs, though, despite AOL’s best efforts at the post office. Keep ‘em coming! December 8, 2005 Sometimes small things, like a burst of lightning, can result in instantaneous enlightenment. I was listening to a right wing talk show yesterday and heard a fellow say, the host agreeing, that because of Bush’s war, the Iraqis now have cell phones and they are building shopping malls. Wham!! It was like I was hit in the head with a baseball bat. Now I understand why we went into Iraq: To give them cell phones and make their kids mall rats. Boy for such a smart fellow I’ve been really thick. I thought we started a preemptive war because Saddam had WMDs and was about to blow us to smithereens. No! No! It was because Saddam was conspiring with Al Queda. No! It was because we wanted to bring Iraqis democracy whether they wanted it or not. I now understand that bringing the Iraqis cell phones and malls was worth the constant increase in the frequency of insurgent attacks which has tripled recently. It was also worth the deaths of almost 2,200 of our brave kids to say nothing of the more than 20,000 maimed for life. Oh, it was also worth the murder of more than 100,000 innocent Iraqis. Yeah, the $400 billion that we are taking out of programs for the middle class to pay for Bush’s war, that was also worth bringing Iraqis cell phones and malls. Now after we made sure with our blood and national treasury that they could get cell phones and malls, over 80 percent of those ingrate Iraqis want us outta there. I mourn for our country. Bring the troops home now! Right now! Every one of them! Martin Freed
