Letters to the Editor 8/19/04 We can’t wait to being receiving copies of The Ester Republic. Haven’t enjoyed reading anything so much since our subscription to MAD magazine expired. We do subscribe to your kind of politics. Sincerely,
August 22, 2004 August 21 was Major Miner Day, when we movingly celebrated the Major Miners, who miracously removed the malleable mineral from the muck, thus giving Ester a measure of meaningful memorability, toasted with Old Milwaulkee, and the next morn with our mumbled mantra mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Thanks to all for their help and participation. I look foward to next year.
August 31, 2004 So, candidate Joe Miller, who wants to represent us in the state legislature, claims to be a champion of family values. Newspaper articles, meanwhile, note that he has no fewer than eight kids. This leads me to wonder what he plans to do with his family during the months-long legislative session. Will he haul them all down to Juneau and attempt to put them all up in the capitol’s notoriously tight housing market? Or is he just planning to leave them here in town where his wife can take care of the brood while he gallivants down to lawyer-land? Just wondering. September 12, 2004 Ten reasons to vote for Ralph Nader in Alaska (with thanks to David Letterman) 10. Alaska is not Florida (or any other battleground state) so Bush and Kerry don’t visit. A Nader vote can send an Alaskan message. 9. Populist Party nominee Ralph Nader wants to earn your Alaska presidential vote. He came here to campaign (like Dennis Kucinich) to meet Alaskans. He wrote to Bush and Kerry, arguing that Alaskans deserve presidential campaign visits (see votenader.org). 8. For Bush, our three electoral votes are money in the bank. 7. Kerry knows Bush will take Alaska. 6. Alaskan votes for Nader work for Alaskans. Like a great fireworks display, they pack a wallop, sending leaders and the American public alike messages blazing across the sky, reminders about what really matters to Alaskan voters. 5. What messages? The PATRIOT Act needs a major overhaul or an outright repeal. It’s an open invitation to government abuses of Alaska privacy. The war in Iraq is a bottomless pit for our national treasures, our wealth, and our youth. 4. Permanent fund checks as an equal share of resource wealth, admired and envied worldwide, must be permanently protected. PFD checks are a start, but only a start. Alaskans deserve more from their vast resource wealth. Call it “Permanent Fund Plus,” basic income with health care insurance, educational support, a living wage for all Alaskans. 3. Settle the EXXON Valdez lawsuit. Ban farm fish; protect wild salmon. Build an all-Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline. “Missile Defense” fools nobody, wastes money, and endangers Alaska. 2. Alaskans expect fair payment from producers for resource reserves either held off the market or sold, equal to client-owners in other countries. 1. Bush and Kerry, listen. If you wanted my vote, you would have campaigned here. Steve Conn
